Not your Nonna's Italian Soda
If there's one thing my long 22 years on earth has taught me, it's that alcohol makes most things better: awkward first dates, emotionally scarring family dinners, late-night studying.... I've also learnt how to be fairly stealthy when it comes to consuming alcohol (thanks to my wildly conservative family).
So today, I am introducing you to a sneaky, boozy twist on the innocent, Italian Soda.
Whereas traditional Italian Soda can be pretty sweet, the adult version is a little more dry and bitter - and let's be real, so are we 🙄.
What you'll need
Prosecco (or your favourite sparkling wine)
Maraschino cherries - just the juice (or any flavoured/cocktail syrup - this was all I had on hand, and it turned out just fine!)
I personally liked my soda as 1 shot Campari (roughly... who really measures these things?🤷🏻♀️), a couple tablespoons of cherry syrup, topped with Prosecco.
However, everyone else who tried it, said it was too bitter or not sweet enough. If that's the case, throw in a few splashes of tonic to balance it out! It definitely makes it sweeter, and more reminiscent of its muse.
I also encourage adjusting the ingredients to how you like them; there are no real measures/proportions. Every one who tried it, had their own preference. You can try more or less Campari, play with the Prosecco-tonic ratio, etc.
Disclaimer: these things are no joke. The mix of Campari, sugar and bubbly, goes straight to your head. So, don't be surprised if after a couple of these, you find yourself coming up with ✨B R I L L I A N T✨ ideas - like wildly whipping some cream, while simultaneously painting your kitchen with it, to see what a boozy Italian Cream Soda, would be like.
Spoiler: it's not the worst. But also not the best... I recommend keeping it sans whip.
Have fun with these babies! I hope they bring a little sunshine to this horribly blizzard-y spring!
